The most common disease in dogs and cats is periodontal disease and can begin at an early age. This disease begins with plaque and tartar buildup that causes minor gum inflammation which can progress to bacterial infection, bone loss, and eventual tooth loss. This is a painful condition which, if left untreated, will allow bacteria to travel through the gums and associated bone structures. The bacteria will then spread to the blood, affecting internal organs such as the heart, kidneys, and liver. COHAT (comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment) will allow this condition to be identified and treated.
